Easter weekend in London

London is the perfect place to spend the Easter weekend, with lots going on to turn visitors of all ages into very happy bunnies. From family theatre to egg hunts; chocolate to spring flowers, here are a few ideas for a fun Easter weekend.

  • Easter worship - Those wishing to remember the true meaning of Easter are invited to attend services for Holy Week at Westminster Abbey - no tickets are required for these uplifting, beautiful church services that are full of inspiring Easter readings, sermons and music. Service times and details are available online. Or head over to Trafalgar Square on Good Friday to watch more than one hundred actors from the Wintershall Charitable Trust re-enact 'The Passion of Jesus', dressed in stunning, authentic costumes and accompanied by several horses, donkeys and doves.

  • Free 'road railway' fun - A free 'Easter Express' road train takes you from Kings Boulevard at King's Cross station to Granary Square on Easter Saturday. Children can join in egg decorating competitions and journey to King's Cross Pond to take part in an Easter egg hunt Finally, the train calls at Skip Garden - home to some very fluffy Easter chicks. The train runs from 10am until 4pm and booking is not required.

  • Chocolate shops - Track down the yummiest chocolate in the capital this bank holiday. From luxury boutiques, such as Hotel Chocolate on Kensington High Street and Charbonnel et Walker on Old Bond Street to fun chocolate centres like M&S World in Leicester Square, you are bound to find your perfect match. Or drop by the Chocolate Museum in Brixton to find out how the stuff is made. You could even book onto a chocolate making workshop and take home your own delicious creations.

  • Spring flowers - Easter coincides with the return of many welcome spring flowers and, even in the heart of London, you can enjoy some of the best blooms that the country has to offer. As well as well-known parks and gardens like Kew Gardens and Chelsea Physic Garden, you can also explore the equally lovely Chiswick House and Gardens and Morden Hall Park. You can pick up all kinds of expert advice for your own spring gardens while you are there.

  • Theatre magic - London's West End is globally renowned for its high quality, dazzling theatrical performances. Choose from toe-tapping musicals, powerful drama and fun family shows. One musical that is especially appropriate for the sweet treats that have become associated with Easter is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, currently running at the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane. Tickets are available online and at the theatre box office. The show transfers to Broadway in April 2017, so catch it in London while you can.
